ECOWAS to World: Respect Venezuela’s Sovereignty Amid Crisis

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has voiced deep concern over recent developments in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.

In a statement from its Abuja headquarters, the regional bloc said it has been closely monitoring the situation in Venezuela and stressed that while states have the right to combat international crimes like terrorism and drug trafficking, the international community must uphold obligations to respect each other’s sovereignty and territorial integrity as enshrined in Article 2(4) of the United Nations Charter.

ECOWAS fully aligns with the African Union’s statement of January 3, 2026, urging restraint and inclusive dialogue among Venezuelans.

The bloc reiterated its solidarity with the Venezuelan people, calling on all states to honor Venezuela’s independence and territorial integrity.

It expressed strong support as they shape their future through an inclusive process.
