House Targets Electoral Act, Constitution, 2026 Budget Overhaul

The House of Representatives said it will prioritise fine-tuning the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill, reviewing key constitutional provisions, and rigorously scrutinising the 2026 budget,

Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kalu announced this on Tuesday during plenary.

Lawmakers returned from Christmas and New Year recess, with Kalu outlining these as core elements of the House’s 2026 roadmap for effective governance and legislative wins.

“Among our key priorities this year is the Electoral Act. The coming days will show the Senate doing their part, having done ours in the House. Any remaining issues will be promptly addressed to ensure it serves its purpose,” Kalu said.

The House will also tackle constitutional amendments to advance the government’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

“Reviewing the Constitution is a critical step in making it a practical reality,” he added.

On the 2026 budget now before them, Kalu pledged thorough committee-backed scrutiny. “We will ensure it becomes a working instrument for MDAs and the nation,” he assured.

Plenary included a valedictory session mourning three late Senators: Godiya Akwashiki, Okechukwu Ezea, and John Kojo-Brambaifa.

“We pause to honour distinguished colleagues whose dedication to the National Assembly endures,” Kalu said.

He noted that adjournment per Standing Rules.Full legislative work resumes Wednesday, zeroing in on the Electoral Act, constitutional review, and budget.
