Nigeria Condemns Benin Coup Attempt, Reaffirms Support for Democracy

The Federal Government of Nigeria has voiced serious concern over a recent attempted coup by a faction of soldiers aiming to overthrow Benin Republic’s President, Patrice Talon.

This was disclosed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, in a statement released on Sunday through Kimiebi Ebienfa, the Ministry’s Spokesperson.

Reports from Currentnews.com.ng revealed that a group of soldiers, calling themselves the Military Committee for Refoundation, declared on Benin’s State TV that they had dissolved the government.

They announced the removal of the president and all state institutions, appointing Lt.-Col. Pascal Tigri as head of the military committee.

Minister Tuggar stated that Nigeria received the news with deep concern and strongly condemned the attempted seizure of power in the neighboring and friendly nation.

He characterised the coup attempt as a threat to democracy and constitutional order, undermining the collective will of the Beninese people, who have consistently upheld peaceful political transitions.

“Nigeria stands firmly with the Government and people of Benin and commends the prompt action by Beninese authorities to safeguard legitimate institutions and maintain peace.

“We applaud the bravery and professionalism of Benin’s security forces in protecting the constitutional order and ensuring the President’s safety.

“Their efforts effectively thwarted this undemocratic attempt.” he said.

Tuggar reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to democracy, good governance, and the rule of law as essential foundations for peace, development, and regional stability.

He emphasised that unconstitutional changes in government are unacceptable setbacks that jeopardise the democratic and socio-economic progress of the region.

Praising Benin as a reliable partner within ECOWAS and the African Union, he called on member states and the global community to stand against such disruptions.

“Nigeria urges all parties in Benin to remain calm, respect the rule of law, and address political issues through peaceful and constitutional means.

“We assure the Government of Benin of our full support and ongoing cooperation to strengthen democracy and ensure lasting peace and prosperity for West Africa,” Tuggar concluded.
