Nigeria Presents 2023 Country’s Report to ECOWAS Parliament

The Nigerian Delegation to ECOWAS Parliament on Friday presented its country report to the Second Ordinary Session of 2023.

Hon Lynda Ikpeazu, who presented the report at the 2023 Second Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Parliament highlighted the country’s progress in the areas of politics, security, economy, and human rights.

Concerning security situation of Nigeria, the report listed the challenges posed by insecurity in the country to include the Boko Haram insurgency, the rise of criminal gangs in the South-East region, and the threat of secessionist movements.

On the part of economy, the report noted that Nigeria’s economy has been affected by a number of factors, including the recent Naira redesign policy, low crude oil output, high inflation, and weak growth of the private sector.

It further noted that despite these challenges, the economy is expected to grow by 2.6% in 2024.

The report also expressed worries over the human rights violations that occurred during the governorship elections in Bayelsa, Imo and Kogi states.

According to the report, Government has assured to investigate the violations and bring the perpetrators to book.

The report reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to implementing ECOWAS texts, including the Protocol Relating to the Community Levy, the Protocol on Free Movement of Persons and Goods, and the Supplementary Act on Equality of Rights Between Women and Men for Sustainable Development in the ECOWAS Region and to advancing the growth of the ECOWAS region through various community development initiatives.
