Reps Intervene in Explosive Ondo-Ogun Oil Island Clash

The House of Representatives has stepped into the escalating boundary dispute over oil-rich Eba Island–Atijere, claimed by Ondo State’s Ilaje LGA against Ogun State,
mandating urgent boundary demarcation to avert violence.

During Wednesday’s plenary unde Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, Hon.. Ojogo Kimikanboh (Ilaje/Ese-Odo, Ondo) raised a Matter of Urgent Public Importance, warning that conflicting claims and misleading narratives could fuel unrest in these oil-producing communities if left unresolved.

The House tasked its Committee on Special Duties with the National Boundary Commission to clarify ownership, restore peace, and prevent law-and-order breakdown.

Kimikanboh cited a pre-colonial 1885 treaty where Mahin Kingdom’s Amapetu incorporated Atijere Island, including Eba Oil Field into Lagos Colony, later administered under Ondo Province.

He stressed: “Eba Island falls squarely within Ilaje LGA.. All major infrastructure, roads, hospitals, schools provided by Ondo governments.”

He noted that no legal document assigns it to Ogun despite media distortions fueling tensions.
