Reps Sound Alarm: 35M Nigerians Face Hunger Crisis by 2026

The House of Representatives has urged urgent action on Nigeria’s escalating poverty and hunger emergency, with 139 million (61% of population) already below the poverty line and 35 million projected to face severe food insecurity next year, Africa’s worst.North East Farming Collapse.

The motion sponsored by Hon. Khadija Bukar highlights insurgency’s devastation of North East agriculture, destroyed farmlands, displaced farmers, no inputs, financing, or irrigation despite improved security.

House Demands Federal Government to harmonise poverty and food security programs according to Constitution Section 14(2)(b), prioritising insecure agrarian zones.

Agriculture Ministry to fast-track North East farmers’ access to seeds, credit, mechanisation, storage, and value chains.

The house also mandated the committees to oversee interventions and report with transparency benchmarks.

Lawmakers warn inaction entrenches “poverty, hunger, and dependency”, threatening national food sufficiency and peace.
