Reps Unleash Probe on Disability Commission Over N97m POS Scam, Corruption Storm

The House Committee on Disability, chaired by Hon. Bashiru Dawodu, has launched a comprehensive probe into the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities over alleged procurement scams, inflated contracts, and shoddy project execution.

Stakeholders unleashed scathing complaints during the session, highlighting shady contract awards and massive cost inflations for projects meant to aid persons with disabilities.

Abdullahi Ibrahim, a key stakeholder, branded the commission “the headquarters of corruption in the disability community.” He exposed a shocking N97 million contract for just 101 Point-of-Sale (POS) machines with starter packs far exceeding market rates.

Ibrahim also flagged overpriced training programs and equipment purchases, demanding accountability for tens of millions in misused funds

Committee members treated the accusations gravely but insisted on documentary evidence for substantiation.

In defense, Ayuba Burki Gufwan, NCPWD Executive Secretary, revealed he revoked his predecessor’s illegal contracts upon taking office in August 2024.

He pledged full documentation and highlighted new zonal offices in four states despite funding shortfalls

Lawmakers scheduled more stakeholder hearings for verification, vowing to enforce accountability in disability services.

This probe pits reform promises against grave corruption claims, crucial for rebuilding trust in the NCPWD.
