Senate Urges Swift Aid for Singer Market Fire Victims

The Senate has unanimously urged the Federal Government to deliver immediate relief to traders devastated by a massive fire at Singer Market in Kano State, with losses exceeding N100 billion.

The call followed a motion by Deputy Senate President, Jibrin Barau, alongside Senator Kawu and seconded by Senator Hangar, during plenary.

Leading the debate, Barau labeled the blaze a monumental economic tragedy ravaging traders’ livelihoods, stating, “This devastating fire has crippled the economic backbone of thousands of hardworking traders in Kano.
The Federal Government must act swiftly to cushion these enormous losses.”

Senate President Godswill Akpabio commended President Bola Tinubu’s N5 billion donation and APC governors’ additional N3 billion pledge, noting, “This collective effort demonstrates leadership and compassion. However, more support may still be required.”

The Senate directed NEMA to assess damage and provide aid, ordered the Federal Fire Service to audit market fire safety nationwide, and tasked its Interior Committee with probing the fire’s causes within four weeks.

The inferno has intensified demands for better safety measures in Nigeria’s bustling markets.
