Wike Declares Friday Work-Free, Locks Down FCT,–Vote Like Never Before

Federal Capital.Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike has declared Friday, February 20, 2026, a work-free day and imposed a movement restriction from 8pm Friday to 6pm Saturday, paving the way for the crucial Area Council elections on February 21.

In a special Thursday broadcast on national TV and radio, Wike rallied residents, “Saturday is your chance to shape the FCT’s future. Elect new or returning Chairmen and Councillors for our six area councils, come out en masse with purpose and responsibility.”

He stressed orderly voting, “Respect rules, each other, and results. Show the world we’re a mature electorate.With President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s approval, the work-free day aids travel to polling units. Security agencies must enforce the lockdown strictly.

Wike thanked Tinubu for signing the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2026, boosting free, fair elections. “Democracy evolves, we’ll keep refining it.”

He prayed for leaders driving development, peace, and prosperity.

“Make your voice heard. Vote for your choice and build a brighter FCT future.” He advised.
