Tinubu Wins 2023 Presidential Election

The Independent National Electoral Commission INEC on Wednesday declared Bola Tinubu, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner of the 2023 presidential election, conducted on Saturday, February 25.

Tinubu scored a total of 8,794,726 votes,
and defeated seventeen other candidates who contested in the election to become the Nigeria’s sixth president elect.

According to INEC, Tinubu won in Rivers, Borno, Jigawa, Zamfara, Benue, Kogi, Kwara, Niger, Osun, Ekiti, Ondo, Oyo and Ogun states, scoring over 25 percent of the votes cast in 30 states, more than the 24 states which is constitutionally required.

Atiku won in Katsina, Kebbi, Sokoto, Kaduna, Gombe, Yobe, Bauchi, Adamawa and Taraba states, Osun, Akwa Ibom and Bayelsa states.

Obi won in Edo, Cross River, Delta, Lagos, FCT, Plateau, Imo, Ebonyi, Nasarawa, Anambra, Abia and Enugu states.

Also, Kwankwaso won in only Kano State.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, who announced the final results in Abuja, said Atiku Abubakar of the People’s Democracy Party (PDP) came second with a total of 6,984,520 votes in the election.

Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) came third with a total of 6,101,533 votes while Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigerian People’s Party (NNPP) came fourth with 1,496,687 votes.

The president-elect and his running mate, Kashim Shettima have also received certificate of return on Wednesday in Abuja as announced by the INEC Chairman while declaring him the winner at about 4:30am the same day.

Before the announcement of the results, the PDP and the LP had called for cancellation of the presidential results

They made this known on Tuesday at a press conference in Abuja, attended by the presidential candidates, Ifeanyi Okowa of PDP and Datti-Baba Ahmed of LP.

The parties expressed disappointment that INEC had failed to upload the results of elections in the over 170,000 polling units onto a central server (IReV) as required by law.
