Global Rights Demands Justice for Ernest Owoicho’s Killing

Global Rights has condemned the alleged extrajudicial killing of Ernest Ochowechi Owoicho by military officers in Benue State, Nigeria.

Owoicho, a father of two, was reportedly tortured to death by officers of Operation Whirl Stroke on April 5, 2025, at Ugbokpo, in Apa Local Government Area of Benue state.

The organisation demanded a thorough, independent, and transparent investigation into his death, emphasising that such actions violate Nigerian law and international human rights standards.

They called on National Assembly, National Human Rights Commission and relevant oversight bodies to participate in the investigation .

In a statement, Abiodun Baiyewu, Executive Director of Global Rights, further called for accountability, compensation for Owoicho’s family, and a policy review on military involvement in domestic law enforcement.

“Owoicho was severely beaten and tortured publicly by the soldiers for two hours, till he succumbed to his wounds and died, no reason or warrants was given for his arrest, as his arrest was never documented, no charges were filed, no evidence presented, and no court heard his case. Instead, the military served as accuser, judge, and executioner—an unconscionable role in a democracy.” The organisation stated.

The organisation also urged.a zero-tolerance directive against torture and extrajudicial killings within the military.

They emphasised that due process must be respected in all criminal justice processes to uphold the rule of law and public trust.

“Rules of Engagement are clear: torture is never acceptable. Killing unarmed, untried non-combatant civilians is not only unlawful, it is inhumane.Enough is Enough. Nigeria cannot build a just society if it continues to permit impunity.”
