FG Directs Vice Chancellors to Appoint Acting Deputies

The Federal Government has issued a directive to all Vice-Chancellors of Federal Universities to nominate their deputies to assume acting roles as their tenure will be ending soon.

The Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, NUC, Mr Chris Maiyaki, disclosed this in a statement
after the Federal Ministry of Education informed the commission about the impending end of tenure of some vice-chancellors.

Mr. Maiyaki said that the incoming governing councils of the universities will subsequently appoint acting vice-chancellors, stating that the interim arrangement is slated to last for a minimum of six months, during which the process of appointing substantive Vice-Chancellors will commence.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has expressed reservations about the government’s move, as it previously rejected the appointment of new vice-chancellors in the absence of the governing councils of the affected universities.
