Gombe Women Storm Voter Rolls As INEC Hits Grassroots Hard

Gombe State leads a voter registration surge with women topping new sign-ups for the first time, as the Independence National Electoral Commission (INEC ) decentralises Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) to 114 Registration Areas starting February 2.

The Resident Electoral Commission (REC), Dr. Saad Umar Idris announced 36,638 new voters in Phase I, with females outnumbering males, a state milestone.

He said Phase II rolls out Voter Enrolment Devices (IVEDs) across communities for 50 days.

Dr. Idris urged stakeholders, “Figures still lag behind other northern states. Political parties, religious leaders, and media must intensify mobilisation.”

He warned that multiple registrations are illegal and harm credibility, confirming LGA level prep meetings for transparent operations.

INEC is pushing registration closer to the people to boost participation ahead of future elections.
