Hijab Not Oppression: Nigerian Group Urges End to Uniform Bans on World Hijab Day

Al Qanitaat Sisterhood has called on Nigeria’s Federal and State Governments to lift restrictions on hijab-wearing for women in uniforms, framing the headscarf as a divine symbol of liberation rather than oppression.

In a statement marking World Hijab Day today, Amira Mrs. Rashida Ibrahim said the hijab fulfills Quran 33:59 (Surah Al-Ahzab), which instructs, “That they will be known and not abused.”

She described it as protection for a woman’s intellect over her appearance. She explained that the hijab goes beyond cloth, embodying hijab of the heart, modest gaze, kind speech, and humble conduct (Surah An-Nur 24:31).

Quoting Prophet Muhammad (PBUH): “Modesty brings nothing but good.” Ibrahim urged leaders to allow hijabs for nurses, police, and officials, stressing: “Judge by skills, not strands.”

Praising wearers, she added, “Pride on, you’re Allah’s flag-bearers!. Wavering sisters, step-by-step, mercy awaits.”

The group invited all faiths to celebrate the hijab as timeless dignity.
