Nigeria Demands Urgent AU Overhaul with Fiscal Discipline, Audits

Nigeria has demanded fiscal discipline, institutional accountability, sweeping reforms, and full implementation of audit recommendations across African Union (AU) organs.

Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Amb. Yusuf Tuggar issued the call in a statement Wednesday by ministry spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa.

It followed his report on the Permanent Representatives’ Committee (PRC) at the 48th Ordinary Session of the AU Executive Council in Addis Ababa.

Tuggar reaffirmed Nigeria’s push for principled multilateralism and a stronger AU, warning that bloating staff without output gains erodes efficiency.

He flagged financial record discrepancies, procurement violations, and poor recovery of loans and advances.

“Adopt a clear timeline for all outstanding audit recommendations without exception,” he urged the Council.

On global ties, Tuggar backed the Banjul Formula for Africa–India and Africa–Türkiye partnerships, and unified continental stances.

He spotlighted crises facing IDPs, refugees, and vulnerable groups in the Sahel and Lake Chad Basin, demanding priority action.
