House Raises Alarm Over UNIBEN’s Alleged Over-Admission of Students

The House of Representatives has flagged concerns over alleged over-admission of students at the University of Benin (UNIBEN)

In a motion of public importance, Awaji-Inombek Abiante, representing Andoni/Opobo/Nkoro Federal Constituency in Rivers State, highlighted the issue.

Abiante noted that UNIBEN, like many Nigerian universities, admitted 350 students to its optometry department exceeding the accredited capacity.

He warned that such practices could place undue pleasure on facilities, traumatise students and parents while undermining the quality of Nigeria’s university education system.

Abiante urged an immediate House investigation to curb future over-admissions.

The House referred the motion to relevant committees for further legislative action.

The house however adjourned plenary to March 31 2026 for sallah break.
