China Backs UN Resolution Branding Transatlantic Slave Trade Gravest Crime Against Humanity

China has commended a landmark United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) resolution adopted on March 25, declaring the transatlantic slave trade and racialized enslavement of Africans as the gravest crime against humanity.

The 80th UNGA session passed the resolution with overwhelming support during a commemoration of the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade. It aligns with the 38th African Union Summit’s call for justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations.

Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, congratulated African nations and the developing world, noting China’s vote in favour alongside 123 other countries.

“This represents a powerful affirmation of historical justice and a major victory against colonialism’s remnants and racial discrimination,” he said in a statement.

Ambassador Yu described the slave trade as one of humanity’s darkest chapters, affecting tens of millions of Africans and leaving lasting developmental scars.

He added that the resolution counters modern racism, supports reparations, artifact returns, and healing.

Marking 70 years of China-Africa ties, the ambassador reaffirmed Beijing’s non-interfering, equality-based partnership.
He highlighted recent zero-tariff access for African nations and Nigeria’s upgraded comprehensive strategic partnership with China ahead of their 55th diplomatic anniversary.

In a swipe at global powers, Yu criticised hegemonism and unilateral bullying, urging multilateralism to protect sovereignty and human dignity.

He concluded, “Justice may be delayed, but never absent,”pledging China’s support for Africa’s voice in global governance and reparatory justice.

The resolution bolsters international momentum for addressing slavery’s legacy amid ongoing debates on reparations.
