INEC Rejects Resignation Calls Over Tinubu Tweet, ADC Escalates Pressure with Global Petitions

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has firmly dismissed demands for the resignation of its Chairman, Professor Amupitan, reaffirming its commitment through verified institutional channels and formal press statements.

INEC concluded that it remains undeterred and fully committed to its mandate of delivering free, fair, and credible elections for all Nigerians.

Earlier, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) announced plans to intensify its campaign against Prof. Amupitan, vowing to submit petitions to foreign governments, the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), and other institutions. The party cited allegations it called damaging to Nigeria’s electoral credibility.

ADC spokesperson, Bolaji Abdullahi stated this in a Saturday statement seen by SaharaReporters.

He insisted Prof. Amupitan must resign immediately, pointing to incontrovertible digital evidence from recent revelations that undermine public trust in his neutrality.

The controversy centers on a recent revelation linking a pro-Bola Tinubu tweet of 2023 to the Chairman, which ADC described as not merely disturbing, it is a grave affront to the integrity of the electoral system.

ADC emphasised that in any democracy, an electoral umpire’s credibility hinges on independence and public perception of impartiality, anything less threatens electoral legitimacy.
