Protests Erupt in Mgbakwu Over Alleged Youth Killing by Security Operatives

Economic activities ground to a halt in Mgbakwu Community, Awka Capital Territory, Anambra State, as residents protested the alleged killing of a youth by operatives of the Agunechemba security outfit.

Our correspondent reports that demonstrators marched from the community through Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) Junction to the Anambra State Government House, demanding justice. They claimed police tried to take custody of the body of the 26 year old youth for investigation, but residents rejected the move.

Women joined the fray, wielding tree branches and leaves—traditional symbols of grief and anger—while calling for accountability.

The action caused major disruptions, with youths barricading community entrances, halting traffic and business in parts of the capital city.

The protesters accused the Agunechemba outfit of repeated human rights abuses, noting this as the second killing in the community within a year. They urged Governor Professor Chukwuma Soludo to disband it.

The community President General, unavailable for interview due to a medical check-up, clarified the suspects were actually from the Anambra State Special Anti-Touting Squad (SASA), not Agunechemba.

The Anambra State Police Command confirmed investigations are ongoing.
