FG Cracks Down on Fake Ambassadors Over Illegal Title Usurpation

The Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a strong warning against the rising cases of individuals and groups illegally using or fraudulently awarding diplomatic titles, particularly “Ambassador,” which lack recognition under Nigerian law or international conventions.

Spokesperson f the ministry, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa highlighted criminal activities including unauthorized use of titles like “Ambassador” or “Diplomatic Envoy” by unappointed persons, fake conferments by self-proclaimed organizations, and production of bogus diplomatic passports, IDs, or vehicle plates bearing Nigeria’s insignia.

The Ministry stressed that only the President has the authority to appoint and accredit ambassadors, stating that no individual, group, or NGO can do so, and titles cannot be bought through payments or memberships.

It clarified that Brand Ambassadors for products or services hold no legal claim to the diplomatic title Ambassador
He said those parading such fake titles would face prosecution for impersonation.

He stated that he Ministry is collaborating with security agencies, Nigerian Immigration Service, FRSC, VIO, and others to clamp down on offenders and safeguard Nigeria’s diplomatic integrity.

The Federal Government vows zero tolerance for actions that tarnish the nation’s reputation.
