House Condemns Telecom Woes, Mandates Probe for Better Services

The House of Representatives has condemned poor telecommunication services across the country.

This followed a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by Hon. Ahmed Jaha during Wednesday’s plenary.

Lawmakers said telecommunications remain critical to connecting families, businesses, education, and economic growth in Nigeria.

They noted that subscribers continue to face persistent challenges, including dropped calls, slow internet speeds, failed messages, high data costs, unstable networks, and poor customer service leading to frustration and financial losses.

The House warned that these deficiencies could pose serious risks during emergencies such as fires, medical crises, and accidents, adding that network congestion during peak periods reflects inadequate infrastructure and investment in the sector.

Lawmakers called for urgent in frastructure upgrades, expanded rural coverage, improved service quality and fair pricing for consumers.

The house mandated its Committee on Communications and Digital Economy to ensure stricter enforcement of Nigerian Communications Commission regulations, stressing that access to reliable and affordable telecom services is a necessity, not a luxury.
