Tinubu Wants Police Trust Fund Act Repealed, Re‑Enacted for Better Funding, Reform

President Bola Tinubu has formally asked the House of Representatives to consider and pass a bill to repeal and re‑enact the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF) Act, 2025.

In a letter dated April 1, 2026, addressed to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, and read during plenary on Wednesday, Tinubu said the proposed legislation is aimed at strengthening the legal and operational framework of the fund.

The President explained that repealing and re‑enacting the Act has become necessary to improve the management and administration of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund, as well as to ensure more effective support for the Nigeria Police Force.

According to him, the new law will enhance the training and skill development of police personnel, facilitate the provision of modern security equipment, and improve the welfare of officers and men of the force.

Tinubu further noted that the reform is designed to boost the fund’s operational capacity, accountability, and long‑term sustainability in line with Nigeria’s evolving security challenges.

He urged the House to give the proposal expeditious consideration, expressing confidence in lawmakers’ commitment to strengthening national security institutions.

The Nigeria Police Trust Fund was established to provide dedicated, additional funding for the training, equipment, and welfare of police personnel, against the backdrop of persistent concerns over inadequate resources and capacity within the force.

The move to amend the Act comes at a time when Nigeria continues to grapple with complex security threats, including insurgency, banditry, and other forms of violent crime across different parts of the country.
