The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) had welcomes the Federal High Court judgment in Abuja on Monday, dismissing Air Peace Limited’s suit challenging the Commission’s authority to investigate consumer complaints and issue summons under its statutory mandate.

Delivered by Justice James Omotosho, the ruling affirms FCCPC’s powers under the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act, 2018 (FCCPA) to receive complaints, assess issues, and conduct investigations as needed.

Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Tunji Bello hailed the decision for clarifying regulatory oversight’s role in safeguarding consumers and ensuring fair markets.

The case stemmed from passenger complaints over unrefunded ticket fares, canceled flights, and related service issues.

“Consumers who pay for services deserve fair treatment, transparency, and redress under the law,” Bello stated.

He stressed that investigations are administrative fact-finding steps, not determinations of liability.

Bello reaffirmed FCCPC’s commitment to fair, professional engagement with market players, upholding due process throughout.

He urged Nigerian businesses to cooperate with regulators and build effective complaint systems for prompt resolutions.

Ondaje Ijagwu, Director, Corporate Affairs of the commission in a statement assured that the FCCPC will continue protecting consumers, fostering competition, and building trust in sectors like aviation.

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission is Nigeria’s primary authority for competition and consumer protection, established under the FCCPA 2018.
